Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mac Jones making team debuts

After a surprisingly successful 2020 campaign by the Washington Football Team that saw them go 7-9 and win the NFC East, Ron Rivera decided to bring in some veteran experience to their QB room. Following two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Ryan Fitzpatrick joins the squad as the QB1 with Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen.

When he was on the field for Miami, Fitzpatrick was a serviceable signal-caller. He started 20 games in his two seasons and threw for 5,620 yards with 33 touchdowns. He now steps into the starter role with weapons like Terry McLaurin, Dyami Brown, and Curtis Samuel at his disposal.

In New England, things are a little unclear as to who the starting QB should be. Bill Belichick decided to re-sign veteran QB Cam Newton to a one-year deal after his up-and-down 2020 campaign. However, in the 2021 NFL Draft, the team also decided to draft former Alabama QB Mac Jones to eventually take the reigns.

Jones lit the college football world on fire last year, passing for 4,500 yards and 41 TDs in just 13 games. Reports have also indicated that he has had a strong training camp so far. Belichick has remained steadfast on Newton being their starter heading into the season, but these preseason games could be enough to make him change his mind. Jones vs. Newton is one of the most intriguing storylines to follow when Washington faces the Patriots tonight.
