4:13 PM ET: The Broncos’ offense is ticking nicely. Lock completes his first pass to K.J. Hamler for 25 yards and the Vikings are in the red zone already.

4:12 PM ET: Lock is the starter for the Broncos and they begin with an 11-yard carry from Javonte Williams. He then adds another 13 yards on his next carry, making for an impressive start.

4:10 PM ET: Jake Browning takes the field as the starting QB for the Vikings. Kirk Cousins is one of a number of Vikings’ players not taking the field today. The second play from scrimmage sees Browning have a ball batted in the air and nearly intercepted. Their first drive goes for a quick three and out, with only a four-yard run from Ameer Abdullah gaining positive yards.

Top storylines to watch

The Broncos have various storylines to follow entering the 2021 NFL season. There is an old saying in the world of football: “If you have two quarterbacks, you have none.” And that is the exact predicament the Broncos find themselves in, with Lock and Bridgewater duking it out for the starting job.

Throughout training camp, it seems neither has the upper hand. The preseason may play a pivotal role in who head coach Vic Fangio will name QB1. Whoever receives the nod will have a plethora of weapons surrounding them, including WRs Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, K.J. Hamler, TE Noah Fant, and RBs Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams. Now that is some firepower.

As for the Vikings, they have been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. They released 2020 first-round pick CB Jeff Gladney following his indictment on felony domestic violence charges. Additionally, Minnesota recorded the lowest team vaccination rate in the NFL.

Still, on the field is what we are concerned with entering this preseason matchup. Head coach Mike Zimmer already stated that his starters would see “minimal” action Saturday. First-round OT Christian Darrisaw won’t be participating, as he is recovering from a groin injury. Rookie QB Kellen Mond won’t see playing time either, having only recently returned from the reserve/COVID list.

That means we will see a lot of Jake Browning, Nate Stanley, and Danny Etling — yay. WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette and RB Kene Nwangwu should be fun to watch on offense, while LB Chazz Surratt and multiple young defensive linemen highlight the defense in this one.
