2022 NFL Draft Rumors: How far does Spencer Rattler fall?

Week 6 of the college football season has finished and what a week it was. With the 2022 NFL Draft now just a few months away, let’s open up the mailbag to talk about the latest news and rumors surrounding college football.

2022 NFL Draft Rumors and News: The Tony Pauline Mailbag (10/12/21)

How far does Spencer Rattler fall?

Not as far as people think. Josh Allen had a terrible junior season at Wyoming and was still the seventh pick of the draft. Never mind the fact there’s still plenty of season left for Spencer Rattler.

Which Texas A&M Aggies prospects stood out in the big win over Alabama?

Obviously, Jalen Wydermyer and Isaiah Spiller had big plays but not big games.

Leon O’Neal played exceptionally well, and I like his game a lot. Aaron Hansford and DeMarvin Leal also played well.

I was not impressed with Kenyon Green at left tackle, and you could tell there is a discernible difference between him and Jahmir Johnson at the position.

I get the reservations around the Ole Miss offense, but Matt Corral is clearly a high-level physical talent. Will his performance against Arkansas help boost his stock?

No, because that game has always been a high-scoring affair. And despite terrific prospects such as Jalen Catalon and John Ridgeway, the Arkansas defense is still in the bottom half of the SEC. Matt Corral was efficient against Alabama, but his numbers did not stand out.

Which quarterbacks can we expect will go early in 2022?

This QB class becomes a bigger mess each week, but because of the position, someone is bound to go high. Speaking with those inside league circles, is there any QB who has more fans in the NFL than in the media?

People have a quick reaction based on what they see each week, but scouts look at the whole picture, and the college football season is barely half over.

I recommend people go back and watch the latest edition of the Between the Hashes podcast I do weekly with Cam Mellor. During the podcast, I mention one concern scouts have with this entire quarterback class — and it has nothing to do with the play on the field.

As of now, which offensive linemen do you think have a shot at cracking Round 1? Evan Neal is the obvious one, but who else makes that list for you?

Evan Neal is the only offensive lineman who has a first-round grade on my board. That being said, Tyler Linderbaum is graded as the 24th-ranked prospect on my board but has a second-round grade.

What’s the league pulse on Ohio State EDGE Zach Harrison? Clearly has upside, but he hasn’t been super consistent this year. Also doesn’t appear to have great bend. With other edge rushers emerging, is he falling down the board?

Some scouts gave Zach Harrison a mid-first-round grade coming into the season. I thought he was potentially a late first-round prospect considering the importance of the position, his upside, and how players at the spot are over-drafted.

Harrison — as well as the entire Ohio State defensive line — has not played well this season and has underperformed. As a result, the draft stocks of Harrison, Haskell Garrett, Tyreke Smith, and Jerron Cage have all taken a hit.

But just like the quarterback position, there’s a lot of season left and plenty of opportunities against good offensive lines for the Ohio State front-line defenders.

NFL Draft Rumors: Who’s a TE sleeper in this deep class?

You mentioned during last week’s podcast the tight end position looks really strong in the 2022 NFL Draft.  Are there any real sleepers at the position people don’t know about?

Keep an eye on Kemari Averett from Bethune Cookman. I graded him as a prospect when he played for Louisville but off-the-field issues — most all of which were proven false — led to his dismissal from the program.

Averett has not played the past two seasons, in large part due to the fact BCC canceled their 2020 campaign. Averett is a massive tight end, and he’s been unstoppable this season.
